Florida Moving Forward On School Carry Proposals

Our Law Shield members should know about a host of pro-gun bills in Florida that are moving forward. This handful of bills would make carry on various school grounds easier and could provide a template for other states to take up:

SB 176 is a bill to allow adults over 21 years of age who have a Concealed Weapon or Firearm License to carry their firearms with them on campus. Currently, college and university campuses are “gun free zones” where criminals can attack students, administrators, faculty members and guests on campus without fear of being stopped by their victims. HB 4005, Firearms on College Campus by Representative Greg Steube (R-Sarasota), is a House bill that seeks to repeal the provision of law that prohibits persons with concealed carry licenses from carrying firearms onto college or university campuses. Under this bill, adults 21 years of age or older who have a valid Florida Concealed Weapons or Firearm License will have their right to carry concealed firearms on college or university campuses restored.

HB 19: The bill would let school superintendents designate employees or volunteers to carry concealed weapons on school property. Any designated individuals would have to have served in the military or law enforcement, and must undergo special training from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

HB 251: Provides that person within school safety zone who is carrying a weapon or firearm in violation of specified provisions may avoid charges by surrendering the weapon or firearm to a specified person at the earliest opportunity if the person has committed no other offense involving a weapon or firearm within zone.
