Shameful: DC Issues Only Eight Carry Permits

Law Shield was disappointed, but not surprised, by Washington, D.C.’s issuance of a paltry number of gun carry permits — only eight, as of January 26.

Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump said, “We’ve had 69 applications, of which three were canceled at the request of the applicant. So far, eight licenses have been approved and issued.”

We agree with the sentiments expressed by Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave, who responded with the news by saying, “Eight whole permits! D.C.’s permitting system is a bad joke and does not even come close to what the judge ordered them to do.”

National Rifle Association spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said, “The NRA fundamentally disagrees with the District of Columbia’s discretionary permitting process.”

So have some appeals courts, as expressed in the Peruta decision.

Law Shield fundamentally disagrees with the notion that the D.C. government should get to decide who has enough “need” to carry a firearm for self-protection.
