Texas House Moves Open Carry Bill One Step Closer to Passage

Law Shield members will be glad to hear that on Monday, the Texas House approved legislation that would legalize open carry for handguns in Texas. However, the bill isn’t for permitless Constitutional Carry, like a handful of other states have.

House Bill 910 would allow those with concealed-carry licenses to carry their handguns openly in a shoulder or hip holster. The bill was approved by a vote of 101-42.

The bill now heads to the Senate for debate in committee. Likewise, the Senate’s companion bill passed the full Senate last month, but it has not been heard in the House Committee.

The next step for the Texas legislature is reconciling the two bills so that one may ultimately go to the Governor for his signature. Gov. Greg Abbott has pledged to sign any bill that advances gun rights in Texas.
